Comparative study of awareness of communication skills, palliative care treatment among M.B.B.S., nursing, and physiotherapy students.

Abstract :

 Introduction: Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach and a specialised care for people with serious illnesses.1,3 Society is unaware of this aspect of care in terminally ill patients .Students of nursing, physiotherapy and MBBS who can be future palliative physicians lack knowledge about this speciality.2 Materials and methods:  A study was conducted in B.J. Medical College and Sassoon General Hospitals SGH, a tertiary government hospital among III year Undergraduate , Nursing and Physiotherapy students, thirty each regarding awareness of palliative care.    A questionnaire incorporating various domains like concept of palliative care, communication skills and symptom management of palliative care was circulated to test their knowledge. A lecture about above aspects of palliative care was taken for them after which the same questionnaire was circulated which showed improvement in their knowledge. Results and Conclusion: Lecture about various domains of palliative care showed improvement in the knowledge of students of undergraduate,nursing and physiotherapy students of a tertiary government hospital.
