Comparison and evaluation of the applicability of various prediction methods in Mixed dentition analysis of South Indian population

Abstract :

Aim: This study aimed to compare & evaluate the validity of different Mixed dentition prediction methods in estimating the size of permanent canine and premolars. Study design: Comparative cross–sectional study Materials and methods: Dental casts of 520 maxillary & mandibular arches were obtained from South Indian school children. Different prediction methods were used to estimate mesiodistal widths (m–d widths) of the unerupted permanent canine and premolars. Results: Paired t–test, independent t–tests, ANOVA, and Tukey HSD multiple comparison tests used to analyze the results. The prediction equations demonstrated diverse validity in predicting the size of canines and premolars. At the 50th percentile, the Moyers method displayed high significance. Conclusion: Prediction equations showed varied validity. Overall, the prediction equation proposed by Sujala Ganapathi et al. and Moyers prediction tables closer to a probability level of 50 % showed high efficacy.
