Comparison of free gingival autograft procedure with modified apically repositioned flap procedure to increase the width of attached gingiva-A clinical study.

Dr Manjeet Singh, Dr Ajay Mahajan

Abstract :

It is commonly accepted that attached gingiva protects the periodontium. The keratinized nature of epithelium, along with the dense bundles of collagen fibers that are firmly inserted to cementum and to underlying bone, provides increased resistance of the periodontium to external injury, contributes to the stabilization of the gingival margin position, and aids in the dissipation of the physiological forces that are exerted by the muscular fibers of the alveolar mucosa onto the gingival tissues. The free gingival graft is still most commonly used technique to increase the dimensions of ketatinized gingiva. The variation of MARF technique presents some advantages over other techniques, including low morbidity and a predictable color match, employs one single horizontal incision, no palatal donor site. Furthermore, the surgical procedure can be conducted expeditiously, with limited chair time for the patient and the operator. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the free gingival autograft and variation of modified apically repositioned flap technique to increase the width of attached gingiva.
