Comparison of post-operative analgesic effect of oral Gabapentin and oral Pregabalin in patients undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy under spinal anaesthesia

Abstract :

BACKGROUND: Gabapentin and Pregabalin both have been used in treatment of neuropathic pain as well as postoperative pain with good results but comparative studies between both are very less. OBJECTIVE: Present study was conducted to compare the efficacy of Gabapentin and pregabalin with respect to increase induration of analgesia, reduction in total post–operative requirements of analgesics and side effects. METHODS: The study was a hospital based randomized controlled double blinded study where 60 patients planned for total abdominal hysterectomy were randomly divided into two groups of 30 patients each. In Group–G 900 mg of Gabapentin (3 capsules of gabapentin 300 mg) and in the group P, 300 mg of Pregabalin (3 capsules of pregabalin 100mg) was administered orally prior to administration of spinal anesthesia. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups for patient demographic, intraoperative, hemodynamic parameters, and side effects. Mean total analgesic required over 24 hour post–operative period and mean no. of doses were significantly lower in pregabalin group compare to Gabapentin group while time to require rescue analgesia was significantly more in pregabalin compare to gabapentin. CONCLUSION: Pregabalin is found to be more effective than Gabapentin, in prolongation of post–spinal analgesia with decreased rescue analgesic requirements and minimal side effects.
