Comparison of Psychological Well–Being using WHO well being index among middle aged males and females in urban area

Abstract :

 

Depression is common unidentified major health issue among middle aged population. There are very few studies on gender differences in depression. The 5–item World Health Organization Well–Being Index (WHO–5) is among the most widely used questionnaires assessing subjective psychological well–being. So the purpose of the study was to assess the level of depression and anxiety among middle age male and females using WHO–5 as a screening tool for depression.

Methods:

The study was conducted for 6 months in an urban region in subjects aged between 35–60 years.  WHO–5 well being index was used to assess depression. The difference between WHO–5 mean scores was determined among males and females.

Results:

A total of 521 participants, of which 239 males and 282 females were included in the study.  There was no significant difference between the age of males and females and more percentage of females were having poor well being index (26%)

Conclusion:

The prevalence of poor well being reported in this study was 20.5%. Poor wellbeing is widely prevalent among the middle–aged women in urban area and mental health services are required to tackle the issue.
