Abstract :

This article deals with the preparation and characterization of manganese doped zinc oxide nanopowder. Prepared samples were examined by means of x–ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, ultraviolet–visible spectrometer, fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and photoluminescence spectrometer to study effect of manganese doping on crystalline size, microstructure, optical properties and energy gap. X–ray diffraction study confirmed the incorporation of manganese ion in place of zinc ion without disturbing the basic hexagonal wurtzite structure of zinc oxide nanocrystal. The average grain size was calculated from the X–ray line oadening and it was found increase for manganese doped samples as compared to undoped zinc oxide. Scanning electron microscope image also confirmed the existence of nano size particle. It is found that the energy gap of the doped zinc oxide decreases with increase of manganese content. Study on photoluminescence properties confirmed the substitution of manganese in zinc oxide through the blue emission in 450–490 nm range.
