Abstract :

Missed MB2 (mesiobuccal) canal in maxillary molars is often the major cause of endodontic failure. There are very finite studies on prevalence of MB2 canal in Indian population. The purpose of this in–vitro study was to report the prevalence of MB2 canal of the maxillary 1st and 2nd molars, determine the morphology of the canals. And determine relative percentage of MB2 in males and females of Nashik city population. Methods and Material: This was an experimental retrospective in–vitro study conducted at dental learning institution. CBCT scans of 240 maxillary 1st and 2nd molars were studied for presence of MB2 in axial section and its canal configuration in axial, coronal and sagittal planes according to vertucci’s classification. Prevalence and relation of it with gender was statistically analysed (P≤0.05). The data was analysed using descriptive stastics. Correlance of presence of MB2 with gender was done using Chi square test. Results: The prevalence of MB2 in maxillary 1st and 2nd molar was found to be 57.5% and 44.1% respectively. Vertucci’s type I morphology (42.5% and 55.83% respectively) was most common followed by type IV (34.78%) in 1st molar and type II (39.6%) in 2nd molar. A higher incidence of MB2 was detected in males than in females (p < 0.05) for 1st molar. Conclusions: Prevalence of MB2 in maxillary molars in Indian population is considered to be high and its incidence in males is greater than females in this study. Detection of MB2 canal is vital for successful treatment.
