Construction and Maintenance of PMGSY Roads An Analysis

Abstract :

 Rural roads promote faster rate of rural economic growth. Newly constructed roads, the upgraded one sand timely maintained roads shall offer multiple benefits in the deprived areas. It is true that roads are to be properly maintained to last longer. From the beginning of the Nagpur Plan (1943–61), all the Programmes have proved poor performance in road maintenance. Based on the lessons learnt, the programme of PMGSY has shown more concern towards the quality in construction with proper maintenance of such roads. The present paper attempts at an evaluation of construction and maintenance status of PMGSY roads in a region, geographically restricting itself to Bhadravathi taluk in Shivamogga district of Karnataka. The study depends on the secondary sources and discussion with the PIU engineers in Shivamogga division has been carried apart from the field observations made by the researchers. Based on the results, the findings and suggestions along with conclusion have been given at the end.
