Abstract :

This study is a comparative cross sectional study conducted in two groups of 50 cases and controls over a period of 3years between august 2011 to September 2014. B mode ultrasound was used to study the correlation of common carotid artery (CCA) intima–media thickness (IMT) in patients with proven coronary artery disease (CAD) in comparison with IMT of normal individuals and individuals with Diabetes mellitus (DM) and /or Hypertension (HTN) of less than 10yrs duration; and to study the association of CCA–IMT with the severity of CAD. The Carotid IMT was found to be higher in cases than in controls and the difference was statistically significant .The presence of risk factors like hypertension; smoking and abnormal lipid profile affected the IMT. It was also observed that carotid IMT increased as the disease severity increased in the form of number of vessels involved.
