Abstract :
Cervical carcinoma is major health problem worldwide. Conventional cervical cytology is the most widely used cervical cancer screening test in the world. Aim and Objective:To classify cervical lesions into malignant & benign groups and to correlate the cytological with histopathological findings. MATERIAL AND METHOD– This is a prospective cross–sectional study done in NMCH, Patna , between October 2015 to march 2017, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.. During the period, all the samples of Pap smear taken in Gynae OPD were studied. 200 cases who had abnormality in Pap smear and undergone both Pap smear and cervical biopsy (including hysterectomy sample) were included in the study The cytological interpretation of the smears was made according to the new 2001 Bethesda system.
RESULT–In my study most of the women(40%) were 31–40 years of age followed by 41–50 years of age (38%).Mean age was 41 years. Unsatisfactory smear was found in 4% cases, inflammatory smear in 59.5 cases, ASCUS in 5% cases, LSIL in 9% cases, HSIL in 10% cases , frank malignancy in 12.5% cases. In biopsy report 5.5% of cases had normal histology report. In 58.5% cases infection (chronic cervicitis)was present. Carcinoma reported in 22.5% cases, CIN 1 in 3.5%, CIN 2 IN 4%, CIN3 in 3% cases and benign tumor in 3% cases. Pap smear shown good correltion with histopathology report.conclusion– Pap smear is cheap, simple , non invasive and effective method for early detection of premalignant and malignant lesion of cervix and it shows good correlation with histopathology report.
