Abstract :

Several etiological factors including genetic, environmental, lifestyle and nutritional have been implicated in the causation of T2DM. One of the important emerging nutritional risk factors recognized for the development of insulin resistance (IR) and T2DM is deficiency of vitamin D. Also it has been proposed to be associated with worsening of glycemic control and progression of complications among T2DM individuals. the association of low serum 25–hydroxyvitamin D₃ [25(OH)D₃] concentrations with type 2 diabetes may be mediated through effects on glucose homeostasis and, in particular, a direct effect of vitamin D on the β–cell function, and thus insulin secretion. Thus we planned to assess correlation between serum vitamin D and HbA1c levels in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

We recruited 196 subjects with T2DM attending O.P.D.at Pt.J.N.M.Medical college Raipur from January 2017 to September 2018 and investigated them for various clinical, hematological and biochemical parameters. Subjects were assessed for serum vitamin D levels and HbA1c. The association and correlation between HbA1c as indicator of glycaemic control and vitamin D level was assessed.

Observations from our study showed that There was strong male prepondenrence in T2DM ,76 % subjects had poor glycemic control,59.7% study subjects were having vit D <20 ng/ml ie they were deficient in Vit D and 40.3% were having vit D 20–30 ng/ml ie insufficient.Subjects with uncontrolled DM showed significantly higher frequency distribution of deficiency of Vit D.Moderate downhill correlation was observed between two parameters indicating increase in HbA1c level is significantly associated with low Vit D level.
