Cutaneous manifestations in Renal Transplant Recipients

Dr. M. Prabakaran, Dr. R. Rajesh

Abstract :

Background: The long term use of immunosuppressive therapy in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) predisposes them to various cutaneous manifestations. Studies on cutaneous lesions in RTRs from South India have been limited. Aim: To study the prevalence and clinical spectrum of cutaneous diseases, and to correlate the duration of the immunosuppressive therapy that predisposed to various dermatosis in RTR patients. Methods: In this study, 80 Renal Transplant Recipients attended the Dermatology and Nephrology clinic of a tertiary care hospital in South India on systemic immunosuppressive therapy were screened for cutaneous lesions. Results: A total of 166 cutaneous lesions were examined in 80 RTRs of which fungal infections (87.5%) were most common followed by drug induced cutaneous lesions (66.2%), viral infections (28.7%) and bacterial infections (18.7%). Miscellaneous lesions constituted 6.2% of cutaneous lesions, which included exaggerated papular urticaria, lichen planus and keratosis pilaris. Conclusion: Cutaneous lesions among RTRs from South India consist predominantly of fungal infections followed by drug induced cutaneous lesions and are different from the Western countries in view of the paucity of malignant lesions. Cutaneous manifestations were seen predominantly during the initial one year of post transplant period.
