Dr Harshita Lal, Dr D. C Punera, Dr Urmila Palaria

Abstract :

Delayed awakening from general anaesthesia (GA) is one of the biggest challenge faced by an anaesthesiologist. We can define recovery from GA as the state of consciousness of an individual when he is easily arousable and is aware of his surroundings and identity. All patients who underwent different surgeries under GA in our institute during the study period and showed delayed recovery from GA based on the Aldrete score were included in the study. Of the3058 patients who were given GA in 18 months, 52 had delayed recovery and were analysed in the study. Extremes of age, type of surgery , type of drug, metabolic causes such as respiratory acidosis ,comorbidities such as diabetes, and deranged kidney function test may affect the time of recovery from anaesthesia.
