Abstract :

The study was conducted by the investigator to find out the differences in the psychological variable named depression of subjects suffering from coronary artery disease (CAD) when they were compared with a group, having no coronary artery disease. A descriptive cross–sectional and co relational design was chosen. Subjects with CAD (N=405) were collected from CTVS Dept. and Cardiology Dept. of a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal and subjects for matched control group (N=405)were collected from the community as well as individuals accompanied the patient. The tool used for this purpose was “Beck Depression inventory (BDI–II)” to rate individuals on 21–point scales for detailed evaluation of level of depression. The data was analysed with statistical tools. A total of 810 subjects participated in the study. Data was summarized by descriptive statistics, namely mean and standard deviation for numerical variables. Distribution of numerical variables was ascertained through Kolmogorov–Smirnoff goodness–of–fit test. BDI scores were normally distributed and CAD scores were skewed. Numerical variables had been compared between case and control groups by Student’s unpaired t test.2–tailedp<0.05hasbeenconsideredasstatisticallysignificant in this comparison. The significant difference was found between control and study group (p < 0.001). Association between CAD scores and depression scoreshasbeenquantifiedbycalculatingSpearman’srankcorrelationcoefficient. Results of this study suggest that inclusion of depression management may be necessary in successful prevention and clinical management of CAD.
