DIABETES AND MEDICINAL PLANTS: A PROMISE FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW

Abstract :

Even from early civilization, plants have been considered to be powerful tool in treating illness. The present article is an attempt to highlight the list of the traditional plants used to cure diabetes. Active constituents of any medicinal plant define the efficacy and safety of treatment to control diabetes. The WHO has defined herbal medicines as finished labelled medicinal products that contain as active ingredients aerial or underground parts of plants or other plant material or combination thereof, whether in cruds state or as plant preparations.  Diabetes mellitus is one of  the  most  common  non–communicable  diseases globally. Herbal medicines have been the highly esteemed source of medicine throughout human history. They are widely used today indicating that herbs are a growing part of modern, high–tech medicine. The medicinal plants, besides having natural therapeutic values against various diseases and considerable works have been done on these plants to treat diabetes mellitus, describes that the antidiabetic activity avonoids, terpenoids, coumarins and otherof medicinal plants is due to the presence of phenolic compounds,  constituents which show reduction in blood glucose levels.  This article provides a ief review of different plants using in the traditional system for the treatment of diabetes since ancient times, and attempt has been made to compile the reported hypoglycaemic plants available in different scientific journals.
