Abstract :

INTRODUCTION: The elderly people are particularly vulnerable to impaired aerobic capacity & fatigue due to anatomical and physiological changes that occur with aging. Aerobic exercise training improves physiological responses at any age. Chair–based exercises have been shown to have a beneficial effect on maintaining or promoting independence and mobility in older people. METHODOLOGY: 42 participants were selected for the training and out of that 34 completed the study. The training program was for 8 weeks and 5 days /week. Six minute walk test and FACIT fatigue scale have been used to evaluate the cardiovascular endurance and fatigue. RESULTS: Relative to controls, the training group has shown significant improvement in 6– minute walk distance and FACIT–fatigue score. (p < 0.001) CONCLUSION: The present study has shown its effectiveness in improving cardiovascular endurance and reducing fatigue in elderly through chair based aerobic exercise.
