Abstract :

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is an endocrine disorder that affects adolescent girls and 5% to 10% of women in their reproductive age. PCOS affects the quality of life and can worsen anxiety and depression either due to the features of PCOS or due to the diagnosis of a chronic disease. We aimed to study the effects of Mind–body techniques which include Acu–TENS, Breathing and Relaxation techniques on physical and emotional outcomes in young Medical students with PCOS. Materials and method: 20 participants of the age group 18– 24 years were selected. The material used for data collection consisted of (1) a self– administered questionnaire to assess the girls’ socio–demographic and clinical characteristics, menstrual patterns, lifestyle habits and assess wisdom and knowledge about PCOS and (2) Participant record form was used to record the Anthropometric measurements such as Weight, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist hip ratio (WHR) to assess the physical outcome, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to assess the emotional outcome. Result: Before and after 6 weeks of intervention, the mean and standard deviation for weight was 65.95 ± 13.21 and 64.55 ± 12.83 respectively. The mean and standard deviation for BMI was 26.23 ± 5.11 and 26.68 ± 6.73 respectively. The mean and standard deviation for WHR was 0.83 ± 0.070 and 0.82 ± 0.072 respectively. After 6 weeks of intervention, there were no significant difference on weight (p–value: > 0.05), BMI (p–value: > 0.05) and WHR (p–value: > 0.05). The mean and standard deviation for BDI before and after 6 weeks of the intervention was 18.45 ± 5.276 and 12.8 ± 5.44 respectively which shows highly significant improvement (p–value: < 0.001). The mean and standard deviation for BAI before and after 6 weeks of the intervention was 17.55 ± 9.45 and 11.75 ± 7.704 respectively which show highly significant improvement (p–value: < 0.001). Conclusion: The findings of the study suggest that the Mind–Body Techniques involving Acu– TENS (CV6, LI4, St36, Sp6, Ren 19), Breathing and Relaxation Techniques significantly improve the emotional outcome which includes depression and anxiety than the physical outcome following 6 weeks of intervention in young medical students with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
