Abstract :
Mastalgia is the most common presenting east complaint. Hormonal agents are effective but have side effects. We observed 60 women with mastalgia presenting to a speciality east clinic over 10 weeks. 46.66 % patients were between 31 and 40 years old. Pain scores were significantly reduced over 6 weeks (6.73 v/s 5.67; p=0.03261) and at 10 weeks (6.73 v/s 4.06; p=0.000003136) in patients of cyclical and non– cyclical mastalgia [(7.66 v/s 5.86; p=0.003436); (7.66 v/s 4.6; p=<0.0000001)] when treated with Gamma– linolenic acid (GLA). GLA therapy over 10 weeks reduced the number of women with clinically significant levels of mastalgia, of cyclical as well as non– cyclical type [23 (76.66%) v/s 16 (53.33%); p=0.03313; 29 (96.66%) v/s 21 (70%); p=0.006490]. Mastalgia decreases quality of life and requires definitive management. GLA therapy significantly decreases its severity and improves quality of life.
