EFFICIENT CONFLICT MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY SOME HEADS OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN GHANA

Abstract :

 The tenet of the research was to adopt the descriptive survey to identify conflict situations and the frequency of their occurrence as well as investigate into the conflict resolution skills that headmasters in educational institutions in the Kumasi metropolis of the Ashanti Region of Ghana exhibited in preventing and/or solving conflicts. Convenience sampling technique was used to select the schools and teachers whereas the purposive sampling was used to select the headmasters. A total sample of 114 respondents, comprising of 110 teachers and four headmasters were engaged in the study. A questionnaire of 30 statements was used for soliciting the data for the research. Descriptive statistics were used to present and analyze the data. The study revealed that various forms of conflict existed in educational institutions some of which occur often while others are rare. However, while headmasters indicated that they attached great importance to conflict prevention; teachers stated that their headmasters attached some importance to conflict prevention. The study concludes that every educational institution has its unique forms of conflict though others are general. The study recommends that heads of institutions and teachers should be trained in the dynamics of resolving conflicts to enable them become versatile and well versed so as to handle conflicts that occur in their educational institutions. < clear="all" style="page–eak–before:auto;mso–eak–type:section–eak" />
