Abstract :

Aim: the aim of the study is to evaluate and compare the flexural strength and translucency of three different yttrium stabilized partially sintered Zirconia viz. Pre–Coloured, Translucent and Colour Dipped zirconia using a Universal Testing Machine and Spectrophotometer respectively. Material and methodology: total of thirty six discs were prepared. The samples were further divided into three groups (Group I, Group II and Group III) on the basis of translucency of different commercially available zirconia (Ziecon) having twelve samples in each; based on the translucency (Pre–coloured zirconia, Translucent zirconia and Colour dipped zirconia). The samples of each group were divided into two subgroups viz. Subgroup ‘a’ in which the samples were evaluated for translucency using spectrophotometer after the samples were veneered and subgroup ‘b’ in which the samples were tested for flexural strength using Universal Testing Machine (UTM). Result: The flexural strength of Translucent zirconia Group II was significantly higher than both Colour dipped Group III and Pre–coloured zirconia Group I. The colour change ∆E (difference in translucency) obtained for Pre–coloured Group I was more perceptible and statistically significant as compared to Colour dipped Group III and Translucent Group II. According to the study there seems to be some co–relation between flexural strength and translucency but it was not constant and evenly spread in all the three groups Hence, the co–relation is statistically insignificant. Conclusion: According to the study, the highest flexural strength of Translucent zirconia allows it to be considered for use in higher stress beå areas including longer spans with more prediction and the Pre–coloured zirconia is the least preferred zirconia for aesthetic zone application.
