Abstract :

Aim: The objective of the study is to evaluate the relationship between cognitive and emotional deficit in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods: A sample of 30 patients with PD and 32 healthy control was recruited out of which 22 of them are matched on gender, age and education. NIMHANS Emotion Perception Test (NEPT) was used to assess emotion from facial and prosody expression. Neuropsychological tests to measure attention and executive functions were chosen. Results: Chi–square, student t–test, Pearson’s product moment correlation, Mann– Whitney U test, z–score of cumulative proportion (Van der Waerden’s formula) and Multivariate Analysis were used for analysis of the data. PD shows significant impairment in cognitive function and emotional perception. Conclusion: PD shows significant impairment in recognizing and discrimination of emotion which is correlated with cognitive deficits.
