EVALUATION OF SMOKING AS A PREDOMINANT RISK FACTOR IN CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE: A CASE CONTROL STUDY

Abstract :

Smoking is traditionally established risk factor in the causation of coronary artery disease, but with emergence of newfound risk factors for CAD present study was conducted to assess the emphasis on the role of smoking as predominant risk factor. A case control study over 100 subjects each was performed and data along with associated comorbidities [diabetes and hypertension] was analyzed. Smoker�s group had fewer associated comorbidities as compared to non–smoker�s wing and was significant. Nonsmokers had comparable gender distribution but was skewed to male preponderance in smokers group. Western population where both men & women smoke, in India, women population is largely nonsmoker, but prevalence of CAD in female stands same as in comparison to males, which is smoking population. This may indicate a premise of departure from the emphasis of smoking as a risk factor in India since both males and females suffer from coronary artery disease comparably.
