Functional outcome of proximal humerus fracture with PHILOS plating

Dr. Shivaprasad S V

Abstract :

Introduction: Proximal humerus fractures are common and debilitating injuries, especially in elderly as osteoporosis and deforming forces of muscle attached. Wide range of treatment modalities ranging from conservative management to shoulder arthroplasty. In our study we have evaluated proximal humerus interlocking osteosynthesis (PHILOS) plate in displaced and comminuted fracture due to its rigid construction, angular stability and early post– operative rehabilitation. Objective of Study: The objective of study 1) To evaluate and analyze the functional outcomes of PHILOS plate for displaced fractures of proximal humerus methodology: The 30 cases presenting with proximal humeral fractures are evaluated clinically and radiologically and treated by PHILOS PLATING functional outcome was assessed with the use of constant murley score at the end of the study, which is followed for 1 month, 3 months, and 6months .Results: In our series, majority of the patients were males, with RTA being the commonest mode of injury in young population and domestic fall being most common mode of injury in elderly, involving 2 part, 3part and 4part fractures of proximal humerus. The fractures united in all 30 patients. Excellent and satisfactory results were found in 90% of patients and with unsatisfactory results in 10% according to constant murley score, and there are no failures. Conclusion: In conclusion Philos plate is an advantageous implant in proximal humeral fractures due to angular stability, particularly in comminuted fractures and in Osteoporotic bones in elderly patients, thus allowing early mobilization.
