Good Governance through e–Governance in India: Need for Innovative Approaches

Abstract :

Good Governance means securing justice,empowerment, more employment andefficiently delivery of services to a common man.e–Governance has been recognised as a vital forcefor transformational improvement in quality, efficiency andeffectiveness of governance.A governance strategydriven byinformation and communication technology has to bedeveloped and applied with the objective ofinging in moretransparency and increased accountability.e–Governance is good governance and every government is supposed to provide good governance to its citizens. The role and process of governance need to be redefined and redesigned with reference to citizens’ needs and aspirations. Citizens want execellence in governance – high quality of governmental services delivered on time and at minimum costs. They want governance to be citizen–centric.ICT has been recognized as the engine for growth and a source of energy for the socialand economicempowerment of any country, specially a third world country.Relationship between Information andCommunication Technologies (ICT) is coming tobe recognized increasingly world over. Today, governmentsare empowering massesthrough IT as it can prove to be effective short–cut to higher levels of equity in theemerging Global Digital Networked Information Economy.This research is an effortto study whether the new information and communication technologies can make asignificant contribution to the achievement of good governance.In this context, this paperexplores how far e–governance is useful for achieving goodgovernance in India and suggests innovative approaches.
