Abstract :

Health management debate centers on the involvement system in the delivery of health care for the population. India is a pluralist society with strong democratic foundations however of late commercial interests and economic order is challenging the system. Since independence the country’s health system has not risen to the challenges of multitude of communicable and non–communicable diseases. The country continues to be at the lower scale of critical health indicators in the world. The public health system has been inefficient in delivery of services and the space has been taken by private sector. This has led to certain adverse effects in the form of public debt due to medical care, questionable practices & individualized care. The paper analyses the public and private health system in relation to the dimensions of health and the strengths and weaknesses of the two systems. The responsibilities of the health system towards populations and health are elaborated alongwith important mechanisms for a unified approach.
