INFLUENCE OF AGE AND GENDER ON SACRO ILIAC JOINT SPACE MEASURED ON COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

Abstract :

Sacroiliac joint is located in the pelvis linking the iliac bone to the sacrum.The SI joint is an axial joint with an approximate surface of 17.5 sq.cm. As we age the characteristics of the SI joint changes(1). The joint surface is smooth in juveniles and becomes irregular over time(2).The most common disorders of the SI joint are the inflammatory and the inflammatory disease processes affect the SI joint in a specific sequence. Erosive changes begin on the iliac side of the SI joint. The first change observed is poor definition or loss of the white cortical line on the iliac side. As the erosive disease progresses, the SI joint becomes widened(3). NEED OF THE STUDY: SI joints show some anatomical variations due to age and gender. CT images allow us to distinguish the normal and the pathological appearance and they would be very useful for the diagnosis of SI joint diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Cross sectional study was conducted based on purposive sam–pling at the Department of Radio diagnosis and Imaging, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal among 149 patients who all were referred for abdomen and pelvis CT examination for various clinical reasons. Abdomen Helical protocol was used and the raw data was acquired with 5mm slab thickness, incrementation 5mm and reconstructed with bone D filter having a window level and window width of 800/2000. Width of bilateral sacroiliac joint space was measured on EBW workstation using measuring tools. RESULT: Mann Whitney U test was performed to determine the influence of age and gender on SI joint space. The result indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in SI joint space width in relation to age and gender. CONCLUSION: This proposed study concluded that width of SI joint space was independent of age and gender.
