Igbokwe, Uche L. , Egbe, Cajetan I.

Abstract :

The concept of peace education has taken the central burner in educational concerns all over the world. This is in realization that all the gains of education, especially that of science and technology, will come to naught if the world is plagued with conflict. English language, being a core subject in all levels of the educational system in Nigeria, should be used to teach attributes of peace instead of the adoption of a separate subject for that purpose. The opinions of 126 English language teachers in secondary in Nsukka Education Zone were sought with regard to themes that should be included in the English language curriculum, as well as the strategies that should be used to teach them. Results showed that teachers agreed that English language teaching content, methods and materials can be used to teach peace education. Recommendations include that English language teachers should be trained and retrained to enable them use the English language for this important purpose.
