Kinetic and Mechanistic study of the oxidation of Glycolic acid by QDC in non aqueous medium

Shikha Soni, B. K. Dangarh

Abstract :

The oxidation of Glycolic acid by QDC carried out in the presence of  PTSA (P–toluene sulfonic acid)  in DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide ) as solvent at 303 K spectrophotometrically (λ max= 460nm). The reaction is first order with respect to QDC, [H+] and substrate. Michaelis–Menten type kinetics was observed. The reaction rate increases with increasing volume percentage of DMSO in reaction mixture, suggesting the involvement of an ion in the rate determining step. The reaction rates were studied at different temperature and the activation parameters has been computed. The reaction proceeds through formation of cyclic chromate–ester between protonated QDC and α–hydroxy acid.
