Abstract :

Objectives: We tested the effect of multi–dose levosalbutamol on onchodilator response and lung mucociliary clearance (MCC) in healthy and asthmatic subjects for its likely therapeutic role in asthma associated cough. Material and Methods: An open label, single arm, multi–dose study was designed to assess onchodilator response and MCC following administration of levosalbutamol (0.63 mg/2.5 mL) aerosol in 3 healthy and 3 asthmatic subjects (FEV1 ≥80%, prescribed with inhaled corticosteroids), aged 29 to 45 years. Results: Levosalbutamol treatment increases the FEV1 and FVC by 23.03 ± 11.77% and 24.77 ± 1.67%, respectively in asthmatics and by 4.67 ± 1.88% and 6.03 ± 6.79%, respectively in healthy subjects. Further, it also increases MCC from 43.7 ± 1.12% to 55.1 ± 11.16% in asthmatics and from 32.5 ± 13.87% to 62.2 ± 13.27% in healthy subjects by improving cilia beat frequency. Conclusion: Levosalbutamol treatment demonstrated quick and persistent improvement in mucociliary clearance for likely incremental role in productive cough management in asthmatics and healthy.
