Necessity of Postal Savings Bank of India since 1882 Towards a New Paradigm

Abstract :

 In a capital–scarce developing economy like India, the financial sector plays a vital role in economic development. In this context, Postal Savings Bank of India(PSBI) can mobilize untapped savings, especially from vast unbanked rural areas. ?e present study aims modestly to analyze the status of PSBI in British India and in Post–Independence Period, Postal Deposits & Bank Deposits and finally attempts to realize the necessity of PSBI at present and in coming years. ?e used data –secondary & primary–are collected from authentic sources like Reserve Bank of India(RBI) Bulletins, Statistical Abstract,India,various government publications of different years, journals, websites and so forth. ?e study finds that PSBI is essential at present and in near future for a greater welfare of Indians
