Oxidation of L–Tyrosine by Tetrachloroaurate(III) – a Kinetic Study

N. Baby Nirmala , P. Vani

Abstract :

The kinetics of oxidation of L-tyrosine by tetrachloroaurate(III) was studied spectrophotometrically in perchloric acid medium at 313 nm at 30 oC. The orders with respect to the oxidant and substrate were found to be one and fractional respectively and the reaction exhibits Michaelis-Menten behaviour. Increase in [H+] and [Cl-] retard the rate of reaction. One of the products, AuI, and ionic strength did not show any significant effect on the reaction rate. The energy of activation, Ea and entropy of activation, ?S≠ were calculated using linear least squares method and were found to be 42.90 ± 2.99 kJmol-1 and -88.96 ± 9.86 JKmol-1 respectively. A plausible mechanism consistent with the observed kinetics was proposed.
