Parental agreement and predictors of television viewing patterns in young children

Abstract :

Background: Electronic media creates a virtual world where children get entertained, informed and relaxed but this replaces physical activities and one to one social interactions and in the long run may impede social and emotional development. Aim: To study the parental agreement and predictors of television viewing patterns in young children. Material and Methods: An observational descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in schools of Chandigarh, our estimated sample size was 180 children. Results : Duration of duration TV viewing (χ²=13.82, P <0.001), Parents of children who watched an excessive amount of TV were nearly four times as likely to agree with the statement that the child was watching adult content. Results of the multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that age of the child was the only significant predictor of late age of initiation TV viewing (>2 years). Conclusion: Only one–fifth of the children studied were found to violate the AAP recommendations of no more than 2 hours of daily TV viewing time.
