Platelet Indices as a Tool in Assessing the Progression of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Dr. S. Nirangjhana, Dr. N. Shuba

Abstract :

Background Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is considered as a prothrombotic state that increases the risk for microvascular complications. Studies associating platelet indices with severity of diabetes have yielded inconsistent results. Aim To compare platelet indices such as platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT) between diabetic and non–diabetic population. Materials and methods The cross–sectional study was conducted in the Department of Medicine with 30 diabetic patients and 30 controls. Platelet indices were measured using Beckman Coulter LH 780. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. Results MPV, Platelet count and PDW were significantly increased in diabetic subjects compared to non diabetic subjects. MPV and Platelet count showed significant positive correlation with HbA1c in diabetic patients. Conclusion Platelet indices especially MPV, PDW assesses the thrombogenic state and hence can be used to monitor treatment.
