Abhishek Sahoo, Biswadeep Jena

Abstract :

During postoperative condition, nutritional intervention by enteral feeding is considered to be an essential tool in supporting both acute as well as chronically ill patients. For fast recovery, it is important that critically ill dogs start to eat and drink as soon as possible during the first two days after any surgery or trauma. Nutritional support early during the postoperative stage reduces catabolic stress, improves immune response, minimizes mortality rate and shortens the duration of hospitalization. Different enteral interventions depend on different clinical conditions and underlying cause of the disease. Though several nutrients are found to be beneficial during healing and recovery, further studies are required to certify the effects of these nutrients in critically ill patients. In this review, an attempt has been made to ing forth the different benefits of enteral feeding in critically ill canines
