PREVALANCE OF VITREORETINAL DISEASES IN OUTPATIENTS PRESENTING WITH CATARACT

Abstract :

Aim: To study the prevalence of vitreoretinal diseases in outpatients presenting with cataract in the department of Ophthalmology. Materials and Methods: 500 patients who had cataract were screened from January2015 to June 2016 and those patients with vitreoretinal diseases were included in the study. Design: Cross sectional study. Results: Age related macular degeneration accounted for 12% of retinal diseases. Occlusive diseases were found in 14% of total patients with mean age of 60 years. Out of which Branch retinal vein occlusion was found in 42.8% and 71.4% of patients suffering from occlusive diseases were hypertensive. Conclusion: In cataract patients early detection and prompt treatment of retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy and vaso–occlusive diseases can prevent their progression and there by improve the visual outcome following cataract surgery.
