Abstract :
Background: The prevalence and clinical patterns of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) varies in different parts of the world and there is little clinical and epidemiological data from the Indian subcontinent. Objective: Our study was designed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical patterns of PsA in Indian patients. Material and Methods: This was a non–interventional, cross–sectional study in which patients attending the dermatology clinic of our centre between January 2018 and December 2018 were screened for the presence of PsA. An informed consent was taken from all the patients included in the study. Psoriasis was diagnosed clinically based on the presence of characteristic skin lesions. The diagnosis of PsA was based on the classification of psoriatic arthritis (CASPAR) criteria. Results: Out of 500 patients with psoriasis, 60 (12%) fulfilled at least one of the above criteria, which was considered indicative of possible joint involvement. the total prevalence of PsA was 8% (n/N = 40/500) with max % of the cases being diagnosed for the first time. The mean age of the study group was 42.98 ± 12.06 years (range, 16–70 years), and the male–to–female ratio was 1.7:1. The most common pattern of PsA was symmetrical polyarthritis in 35% cases followed by spondyloarthropathy in 25% cases. Conclusion: There is a relatively low prevalence of PsA among Indian psoriasis patients presenting to dermatologists. No correlation was found between the severity of skin and nail involvement and articular disease
