Prevalence of Behavioural Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Diseases Among High School Students in Urban Dibrugarh, Assam

Abstract :

Background: The burden of Cardiovascular diseases in India is increasing at an alarming rate for the last few decades, comparatively at higher rate in urban areas. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of behavioural risk factors of CVDs among high school students of government schools in urban Diugarh. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted among 300 adolescents studying in class 8–10 of government schools using 2 stage random sampling. Data was collected using pretested questionnaire and statistical analysis was done using proportions and chi square test. Results: Prevalence of tobacco use was 96(32%) with 68(22.66%) being current users while alcohol use was found in 26(8.66%). Inadequate intake of green leafy vegetables(≤3 servings/week) was found in 156 (52%) and fruits in 210(70%). Added salt was found in 136(45.33%) and physical inactivity in 72(24%). Conclusion: There is need to reduce the risk factor prevalence of CVD to address the future epidemic of non communicable disease.
