Abstract :

Metabolic syndrome (MS) refers to a cluster of features conferring the risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Considering the fact that the rural populations are adopting certain urban lifestyle changes, this study intended to estimate the prevalence of MS in the rural population of South India by three widely accepted criteria. The study population included 188 adults. Blood pressure, anthropometric measurements, fasting blood sugar (FBS) and lipid profile were measured. This study identified MS as 6.9%, 22.9% and 16.5% by WHO, AHA/NHLBI and IDF criteria respectively. In males, the prevalence was 11.4%, 25% and 17%; in females, the prevalence was 3%, 21% and 16%.
