Abstract :

Background: Diabetes and obesity are individually associated with development of fatty liver and Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The study was conducted to find the association between obesity and NAFLD in diabetics. Methods: 104 patients aged ≥ 40 years of either gender suffering from Diabetes Mellitus type II were enrolled prospectively in our study. These patients were categorized on the basis of body mass index and were screened for NAFLD using laboratory tests and ultrasonography of abdomen. Results: In type Ⅱ diabetics the prevalence of fatty liver was found as 52.9% and prevalence of NAFLD as 17.3 %. Higher rate (7.27) was observed in obese patients as compared to normal. No statistically significant correlation was found with age, gender, duration of diabetes or HbA1C %. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of NAFLD in patients with Diabetes especially with obesity. Therefore, patients with diabetes mellitus and obesity need to be screened for NAFLD.
