Abstract :

Objective: To evaluate the role of oral thiocolchicoside and etoricoxib in the management of mid and lower ureteric calculus with semirigid ureteroscope. Material and methods: Between January 2017 and March 2018, 144 patients who presented with ureteral stone of size 8–12 mm were randomized into 4 groups: Group A– thiocolchicoside, Group B– etoricoxib, Group C– both the drugs and Group D – placebo. During surgery ureteral orifice appearance, requirement for ureteral dilatation, ureteroscope negotiation time, total operating time, procedural complication and drug related side effects were noted in each group. Results: Significant number of cases in group A and C had wide orifice appearance and did not require dilatation as compared to placebo. Scope negotiation time through the orifice up to the stone was significantly lower in group A and C. In group B there was no statistically significant difference in the orifice appearance, requirement for dilatation and scope negotiation time as compared to placebo. Total operative time was also significantly lower in groups A and C (p = .001), but not in group B (p = 0.315) as compared to placebo. Conclusion: Thiocolchicoside appeared as a safe and effective treatment to make ureteroscopy easy and reduced the total operating time plus the risk of complications. Etoricoxib did not have any beneficial effect during surgery. No major drug related side effects were observed in our study
