Abstract :
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer site in women. Elastography is a relatively new imaging technology that creates images of tissue stiffness. On the elastogram, different colour modes imply different tissue stiffness, thereby offering more information with respect to differentiation between benign and malignant lesions.
Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of ultrasound elastography in detection of various benign and malignant lesions of east with cytology or histopathological correlation.
Material & Methods: 50 female patients with east lump were evaluated. All cases were examined clinically and investigated with ultrasound elastography followed by cyto/histopathological examination. The data so procured was analysed statistically, were documented and the results analysed.
Results: On Elastography 33 lesions were diagnosed as benign and 17 as malignant, and Histopathology revealed 27 lesions to be benign and 23 lesions to be malignant. On elastography sensitivity for malignant lesions was 73.91% and specificity was 100.0%.
Conclusion: Sonoelastography is a simple, non invasive and rapid diagnostic method that can provide a diagnostic contribution to conventional ultrasound by increasing specificity.
