Role of ventriculo-peritoneal shunting in patients of tuberculous meningitis with hydrocephalus.
Dr. Amar Nath
Abstract :
Aim – Study done to evaluate response of ventriculo–peritoneal {VP} shunting in patients of tubercular meningitis {TBM} with hydrocephalus. Introduction – Hydrocephalus is one of commonest complication in patients {pts} with TBM. Pts are managed by VP shunting who are likely to respond better to surgery and extra–ventricular drain in poor surgical risk pts. This study is done to evaluate role of VP shunting in these pts. Patients and method – We retrospectively analysed 24 patients of TBM with hydrocephalus in different grades operated in last 4 years and evaluated response to shunting. Initially pts were put on conservative treatment and pts with progressive hydrocephalus and not responding to medical treatment underwent VP shunting. Conclusion – Patient’s response to shunting depends on GCS at presentation with good response in pts presenting with good GCS but it cannot be generalized as pts response can be good if pts poor GCS can be directly attributable to severity of hydrocephalus and not due to infarcts in ain.
