Abstract :

Objective– To study the association of serum free fatty acid and lipid profile with diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy as well as it’s type in patients of type II Diabetes mellitus. Methods– A prospective study performed on 84 type II Diabetes Mellitus patients with quantitative assessment of palmitic acid the standard free fatty acid as well as lipid profile . The study group was divided into 2 subgroups namely Gp. I with normal free fatty acid and Group IIwith elevated free fatty acids. The retinopathy and maculopathy in the two groups were graded on the basis of E.T.D.R.S classification based on slit lamp biomicroscopy, fluorescein angiography and o.c.t findings. Results– Of the 84 type II Diabetes mellitus patients, palmitic acid was elevated in 42.85% in group I AND 57.14% in Group II.Serum cholesterol level was found to be significantly raised in Group II as compared to group I. Clinically significant macular edema (C.S.M.E) was found in 16.6% in group I as compared to 25.1% in group II. Conclusion– The present study suggests higher levels of free fatty acid may be an important predictor for the presence as well as progression of diabetic retinopathy in type II Diabetes mellitus.
