Sociodemographic and component profile of patients with Metabolic Syndrome attending a tertiary care hospital in Sikkim: A hospital based cross sectional study.

Abstract :

Background: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a global public health problem. The socio demographic and component profile varies from place to place. Methodology: A cross sectional hospital based study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Sikkim over a period of 6 months. 70 patients diagnosed with Met S and consenting were enrolled and their sociodemographic and component profile were recorded and expressed as percentage. Results: 68.57% active workers and 72.86 % belonging to upper and upper middle class had MetS. Of the components majority (75.71%) had raised triglyceride level and only 30% had lower HDL. Discussion: The hilly terrain, the active lifestyle and the culture of a place reflects on the profile of Met S. Conclusion: A holistic and well–designed approach emphasising on life style modifications would help in controlling the disease.
