Abstract :

The ground water is the chief source of fresh water in this small city of Madhya Pradesh. To assess the physico-chemical properties of underground water in pre and post monsoon underground water samples were collected in the months of May 2011 & November 2011. The physico-chemical properties such as pH, total dissolved solid, electrical conductivity, acidity, alkalinity; chloride, iron, total hardness, calcium and magnesium hardness, and fluoride concentration were studied and analyzed. The results obtained were compared with permissible limits of the drinking water set by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Water quality in post monsoon is better than the pre monsoon season. The physico-chemical characteristics of different water samples showed that pH, EC, alkalinity and iron content were higher in post-monsoon. Results indicate that fluoride content was very low in the samples of Shivpuri town and around and all the water samples were suitable for drinking purpose.
