Abstract :

The present investigation was undertaken to study combining ability and nature of gene action for yield and it’s components, in cross involving 8 parents of Wheat varieties viz., HI-1544, HD-2864, HW-147, GW-273, C-306, JWS-17, GW-366 and LOK-1 and their 28 F1’s (excluding reciprocal) obtained through diallel cross were evaluated during rabi 2012-13 at College farm, College of Agriculture, Rewa. Observations were recorded on 11 quantitative traits. Collected data were subjected to combining ability analysis as per Griffing’s (1956) model l method 2. Highly significant variances were observed for gca and sca which indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive gene effects for all the traits except panicle length (where only sca variance was highly significant indicating non-additive gene action for this trait). Among the parents, HW-147, GW-273 and C-306 identified as the good general combiner and HI-1544/GW-273, GW-273/C-306, HD-2864/HW-147, HD-2864/GW-366, HI-1544/GW366, JWS-17/LOK-1, HI-1544/LOK-1, HI-1544/HD-2864, GW-273/LOK-1, C-306/LOK-1 and C-306/JWS-17 identified as good specific combiners for grain yield, therefore, crosses involving high x low general combiners in respect of different characters in the present study may be utilized for obtaining transgressive segregants in further generations for yield and its components.
