Dr. Parul Garg

Abstract :

Background: To assess the visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and Lugol’s iodine (VILI) as screening methods for cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia. The study also evaluates the usefulness of applying Logol’s iodine in suspicious acetowhite areas. Material & Methods: The study was conducted on 540 gynaecological patients who were non pregnant. After obtaining informed consent, each woman were subjected to VIA/VILI examination. A colposcopic directed biopsy was taken in patients with abnormal findings on colposcopy. Results: In the present study, the sensitivity of VIA/VILI was 94.87%, specificity was 73.25%, positive predictive value was 21.63% and negative predictive value was 99.43% with biopsy as the reference standard. Conclusion: VIA/VILI is simple and easy to learn approach that is minimally reliant upon infrastructure. Test results are available immediately. The application of lugol’s iodine precisely delinates squamo – columnar junction and clarifies suspicious acetowhite areas
