Abstract :

Background: To assess the visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and Lugol�s iodine (VILI) as screening methods for cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia. The study also evaluates the usefulness of applying Logol�s iodine in suspicious acetowhite areas. Material & Methods: The study was conducted on 540 gynaecological patients who were non pregnant. After obtaining informed consent, each woman were subjected to VIA/VILI examination. A colposcopic directed biopsy was taken in patients with abnormal findings on colposcopy. Results: In the present study, the sensitivity of VIA/VILI was 94.87%, specificity was 73.25%, positive predictive value was 21.63% and negative predictive value was 99.43% with biopsy as the reference standard. Conclusion: VIA/VILI is simple and easy to learn approach that is minimally reliant upon infrastructure. Test results are available immediately. The application of lugol�s iodine precisely delinates squamo – columnar junction and clarifies suspicious acetowhite areas
