Study of the personality factors among the cases of persistent somatoform pain disorders at tertiary care centre in Meerut.

Abstract :
Background: Somatoform disorders are pathophysiologically and clinically unexplained occurrence of one or more physical complaints. Neuroticism and alexithymia have been found to important predictors of somatic disorders. Aim: To study the personality factors, sociodemographic conditions and presumptive stressful life event score among the patients suffering from persistent somatoform pain disorder. Material and Methods: Observational descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in Psychiatry OPD on forty somatoform pain disorder cases diagnosed according to ICD–10. Results: The prevalence was 1.1%. Female to male ratio was 2.01:1. Maximum number of patients (40%) belongs to age group 51 to 60 year. About one third had positive family history. About 23% patients had stressful life events before the onset of illness. Presumptive stress score was more than 748 in 12.5% cases. Patients had low sten score (1 to 3) in factors A (65%), C (85%) and H (57.5%). In factors Q1, Q2 and Q3, most of patients had average sten score. Conclusion: It is a need of time to develop specific elaborative modules regarding the nature of illness in those presenting with somatic symptoms without organic causes. Provision the necessary treatment and tackling their fears need proper understanding the patient‘s personality traits.
