Abstract :

Salicylaldehyde was reacting with 2-amino benzoic acid to produce the Schiff base ligand benzoic acid 2-salicylidene (L) as a, which was identified by Microelemental Analysis, 1HNMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Complexation of Schiff base ligand (L) with Co(II),Ni(II),Cu(II) and Zn(II) metal ions in 1:1 M:L ratio in aqueous ethanol at optimum pH yielded a series of neutral complexes with the general formula of [M(L)H2O]. Complexes were characterized by flame atomic absorption, Elemental Analysis (C, H, N), FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic methods, as well as magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements. The nature of the complexes formed were studied following the mole ratio and continuous variation methods; Beer\'s law obeyed over a concentration range of 1.10-4 - 3.10-4 M. High molar absorbtivity of the complex solutions were observed. From the obtained data the tetrahedral structure was suggested for all prepared complexes.
