Abstract :

: Objective: The aim of the study is to compare the initial treatment outcomes of minimally invasive surgical technique (MIST) and open flap deidement (OFD) techniques in the treatment of advanced periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Ten patients of age between 20–50 years and diagnosed with chronic periodontitis having ≥5 mm periodontal pockets at least in one site with deep intraosseous defects were included in the study. Institutional ethical committee approval was obtained. The study details were explained to the patients and consent was taken. The patients were divided into two equal groups (Group I– OFD+bone graft, Group II– MIST +bone graft). In all the patients root surfaces and defects were thoroughly deided followed by placement of bone graft. The clinical parameters (gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, and clinical attachment level) were recorded at baseline and 3 months. Results: The obtained data was analyzed. Paired t test was performed to compare means within the groups, and unpaired t test was performed to compare the means of the two groups. Stastically significant results were obtained at 3, 6 and 9 months postoperatively within both the groups. Conclusion: The microsurgical approach is a remarkable improvement in early healing and persuading a less postoperative pain, when compared with a conventional macroscopic approach.
